Grand Bay

Located in the northwest and in the most sunniest part of the island about twenty kilometers from the capital Port Louis, Grand Bay is the most touristic place in Mauritius, and has become one of the most fashionable city on the coastal region. Long ago, being known as a fisherman’s village, also known as a historical site for the British invasion of Isle de France in November 1810, Grand Bay is named after the French who settled in those days, guns to protect themselves from eventual British attacks. The coastal city now has over 12,000 inhabitants and is easily accessible thanks to a major road network including the highway that crosses the island from the airport and since 2013 a motorway bypass of Port Louis which reduces travel time.

The bay being large and beautiful is aptly named with its bright waters at any time changing colour from light blue to dark blue, sky blue to turquoise blue and emerald green. Closing on itself, Grand Bay is home to several boating pleasures. It is highly considered by visiting sailboats. The port is also the starting point for many boat trips to Gabriel Island, the Flat Island, the Serpent Island and many more like the Benitiers Islands etc., and to the underwater world with clubs and dive boats with transparent background that can discover the seabed, but if you want to have an unforgettable experience, one needs to embark on one of the submarines with two seats, where one can explore the undersea water amidst the tropical fishes. Water skiing lovers are also pampered just as the big Game fishing.

During summer, Grand Bay focuses on a majority of tourists. Its golden beaches are superb but swimming is difficult because of the boats moored in the harbour. To have a good swim, one can go to La Cuvette beach (at the end of the street between Le Mauricien Hotel and the Royal Palm Hotel) or one can also move on the road to Pereybere or to the other end of the bay (not very far from Le Capitaine restaurant). Two beautiful beaches, just next door, in Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches, are conducive to relaxation and swimming.

When talking about rich culture, it definitely leads to culinary wealth. The many restaurants in grand Bay have all the flavours in the world. Even when it is Chinese, Creole, Indian, Japanese or European Cuisine, one gets to have a wide a choice. After enjoying a good meal, you can treat yourself to a drink in one of the various fashionable bars and ride in one of the nightclubs like the Banana Café, Zanzibar, Les Enfants Terribles, and the Buddha Club at the pace of the best hits of the year. Also, it is a must to introduce you to the Sega, the typical Mauritian dance on Fridays and Saturday nights.

You can also indulge in the many shops in Grand Bay. The smallest shops are available (tailors are many) where you can get a dress, a blouse, Bermuda Shorts or even suit for men to be stitched. The larger shops such as The Sunset Boulevard shopping complex with its chic shops and duty free shops in the city centre through the Grand Bay market, slightly set back from the main road, which includes dozens of stalls housing the local crafts, clothing, jewelry etc., Super U which in addition to its hypermarket ,home to a large shopping mall to complete by La Croisette, at the roundabout, the road from Port-Louis, a huge shopping complex consisting of many global brands as well as a cinema.

All services like the Post office, banks, Money exchange offices, Police stations, places of worship, etc., and in the medical field with hospitals, doctors, pharmacists, dentists, ophthalmologists and the Chiropractor are at your disposal at Grand bay.

In compliance with the local government law, the village of Grand Bay is endowed with a Village Council bringing together the elected candidates by the last village elections to 12 in number. This administration takes the responsibility of the whole sector extending from Pereybere up to part of Trou aux Biches. The advisor’s office is located at La Salette Street; Grand Bay near Super U.
